Glass City Church of Christ

Toledo, Ohio

PRAISING BEHIND ENEMY LINES (Psalms 137:1-4)

This Psalm is written by a unique group of Israelites. They find themselves in Babylonian exile. The experience of culturalization was designed to get them to abandon their identity, religion, and ultimately their God. Reflecting on the destruction of the city and temple, they came to the waters of Babylon and the captors asked the captives to sing songs of Zion. This lesson will address the question, “How do we praise in problematic places?”

Robert G. Birt, Jr. ‘Rob’ was born and reared in Jacksonville, FL. He  and his beautiful wife Winda have one daughter, Octavia (Keith) Wright and three grandchildren Zephan,  Zamaria and Kendrale. Rob has one brother, and three sisters. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Birt, Sr. (Gloria).

Currently, Rob ministers in Toledo, OH at the Glass City congregation of the churches of Christ where he has served since 1998.  He was Pulpit Minister at the Louisa Street Church of Christ in New Orleans, LA for eight years prior to relocating to Toledo.

Robert graduated from Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, TX in 1984. In the years 1985, 1987 and 1988 he received the Outstanding Young Man of America Award. He received his Masters of Divinity in 2010 from Winebrenner Theological Seminary. In 2013, Robert received his Doctorate in Theology from United Theological Seminary.

Dr. Birt believes in ministry and the development of spiritual gifts in the young and older members of the Lord’s body.  One of his favorite scriptures is Romans 12:1-2. The words that he lives by are: “Never look down on a man unless you’re looking down to lift him up!”
